Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Dental Hygienist to join our dental practice. As a Dental Hygienist, you will play a vital role in promoting and maintaining excellent oral health for our patients. You will provide preventive dental care services, conduct patient assessments, educate patients on oral hygiene practices, and assist the dentist during dental procedures. Your attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and commitment to patient care will contribute to our mission of delivering outstanding dental services.

Responsibilities:

  1. Perform dental prophylaxis (cleaning) procedures, including removing plaque, calculus, and stains from teeth.

  2. Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays) as required by the dentist.

  3. Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including reviewing medical histories, taking vital signs, and recording dental charting.

  4. Assist the dentist during dental procedures by handing instruments, suctioning, and providing patient comfort measures.

  5. Administer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide to patients as directed by the dentist.

  6. Educate patients on proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and nutritional counseling.

  7. Apply dental sealants, fluoride treatments, and other preventive measures to protect patients teeth.

  8. Perform periodontal assessments and assist in the treatment of periodontal disease, including scaling and root planing.

  9. Conduct oral cancer screenings and document findings in patients records.

  10. Maintain and sterilize dental instruments and equipment in accordance with infection control protocols.

  11. Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including treatment plans, progress notes, and referrals.

  12. Assist in scheduling and managing appointments, as well as handling billing and insurance claims.

  13. Stay current with advancements in dental hygiene techniques, technologies, and best practices through continuing education and professional development.

  14. Collaborate with the dental team to ensure the highest quality of patient care and optimize practice efficiency.

Requirements:

  1. Successful completion of an accredited dental hygiene program.

  2. Current state dental hygiene license and CPR certification.

  3. Proven experience as a Dental Hygienist is preferred, but exceptional new graduates will be considered.

  4. Proficiency in performing dental prophylaxis, taking dental radiographs, and administering local anesthesia.

  5. Strong knowledge of dental hygiene procedures, oral health education, and preventive care.

  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively educate and engage with patients.

  7. Ability to work well in a team environment and collaborate with dental professionals.

  8. Exceptional attention to detail, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.

  9. Familiarity with dental software systems for patient management and charting.

  10. Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of infection control and sterilization procedures.

  11. Willingness to participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Active Maryland Dental Hygiene License 

  • Excellent working knowledge of dentistry, dental hygiene procedures, dental patient screening and medical history documentation

  • Knowledge of Dentrix dental office software

  • Valid X-Ray certification in the State of Maryland

 

Preferred Experience

  • Experience using Velscope, Diagnodent, digital scanner (iTero), digital x-rays and electronic medical record systems

  • Desire to continue learning and grow clinical skills to meet needs of patients and provide preventative care and overall maintenance of patients’ dental health

  • Clinical needs as required by office

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform essential duties as deemed necessary by the Office/ Doctor/ Heartland Dental with or without reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties of the position

  • Prolonged periods sitting and standing

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 45 pounds at times

  • Availability to attend virtual training sessions (or in-person) periodically throughout the year
