Patient care: Cleaning teeth, removing plaque, and polishing teeth
Oral health assessment: Examining the mouth, head, and neck for signs of disease
Treatment planning: Taking X-rays, applying sealants and fluoride, and deciding on treatment plans
Patient education: Teaching patients about oral hygiene and nutrition
Record keeping: Documenting patient care, treatment plans, and medical history
Patient communication: Communicating with patients in a professional and understandable way
Treatment room management: Checking the treatment room for cleanliness and making sure equipment is maintained
Administrative support: Scheduling patients, reviewing patient forms, and dismissing patients
Treatment assistance: Assisting dentists with selecting treatments and calling in dentists for immediate consultation
Education: Graduate from an accredited dental hygiene program that includes at least two years of academic study.
Examinations: Pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination, the clinical examination, and the Minnesota Jurisprudence examination.
Background check: Complete a background study through MN Human Services.
CPR certification: Obtain current certification in CPR for adults, children, and infants.
Vaccinations: Be up to date on your vaccinations, including Tdap, varicella (chicken pox), and Hepatitis B.
